“When I first sought help, I was waking multiple times each night without understanding why. I would wake each morning feeling exhausted and struggle to remain alert for much of the day. Given an opportunity it was quite possible for me to put my head down for a quick nap in the day only to wake up 3 hours later! All of this was obviously having a negative effect on my life and I wasn't able to explain to anyone why I felt this way. It all went on for so long that I started to think it was just a normal part of getting older and having a stressful job as well as small children.
When Dot started working with me, she helped me to understand that there were underlying issues that were causing my sleep problems. The changes were all broken down into small parts and introduced over a period of a month which made adapting to them easier to accomplish. I was waking up anytime between 1230 and 230 in the morning and couldn't get back to sleep. So I would get up and watch TV. Sometimes I would go back to sleep, but be very restless and sometimes I just couldn't get back to sleep. So I was only getting three or four hours of sleep per night. This made me very tired, grumpy and short tempered and this had been going on for I think for over 10 years.
Concentration, especially at work was not the sharpest. I ended up making lots of silly mistakes, which could cost thousands and thousands of dollars. But luckily enough, most of the time I caught those mistakes. I was very tired during the afternoon. And if I could put my head down on the desk, I would have tried to nap. I tried melatonin but that just gave me nightmares. I tried exercising to get myself more tired. But that didn't seem to work. I had given up and just took it as this is the way my life is going to be. Occasionally, maybe twice a month I would sleep through the night. But that was such a rare occasion. And it just didn't give me the boost to get back into a rhythm.
My daughter saw an article about you. I didn't know what to expect. I thought “I've got nothing to lose”. You came along and you have done wonders for me. You were very professional all the time, but friendly. It's not like talking to a typical doctor or surgeon, you were open, gave me all the information plus you gave me support. If other people are having problems sleeping, then they need to get help. They don't need to live with it. And you proved that to me.

I would occasionally wake up when my husband left the room. Or on the odd occasion that he came back to bed and tried to go to sleep. His mood and irritability was challenging and difficult for me to understand because I was getting enough sleep.
I was pleased that you were able to come and be at the house, to better assess the situation. You made good suggestions and helped him understand that it was for his well being… his health.
